Subject Overview
Our intent is that the Maths curriculum gives us the opportunity to discover the satisfaction of being fluent in maths and understanding its purpose in different contexts. Students study the four main areas of mathematics: Number, Algebra, Data Handing and Shape, Space and Measures. Students are regularly assessed and class sets are reviewed so that appropriate changes can be made.
Qualifications / curriculum offer
In Key Stage 3 students have 4 hours of mathematics a week. In Year 7, students are taught in tutor groups for the first few weeks, after which they are placed in appropriate ability sets using all available attainment data. Students in KS3 begin studying a 5-year curriculum, preparing them for the more rigorous GCSEs that they will face in Year 11.
In Key Stage 4 all students have 5 hours of mathematics a week. In Year 10, students will explore more complex topics at a greater depth in preparation for their GCSEs. In Year 11, students will study the remaining GCSE topics and prepare for their exams through regular exposure to GCSE style questions and practice exam papers. The most able students will have to opportunity to sit an additional qualification in Further Maths, which bridges the gap to A-level Maths.
In Key Stage 5 the Maths Department offers both A Level Maths and Further Maths. A Level Maths students are taught for 5 hours a week and Further Maths students for 10 hours a week. The Maths department also offers Core Maths to those students who achieve a grade 6 at GCSE but wish to continue studying mathematics. In addition, GCSE re-sit classes are offered and it is our aim that all students leave Chestnut Grove with at least a grade 4 in Maths by the end of Year 13.
